Tips on studying a foreign language:
*STUDY EVERY DAY. A foreign language course is different from any other course you take. Language learning is cumulative: you cannot put assignments, reviews, and/or practices off until the weekends. Study 30 to 1 hour the material covered in class.
*DISTRIBUTE YOUR STUDY TIME. Focus on a different task each time: vocabulary first, grammar second, etc. Get an overview during the first 30 minutes: spend 10 minutes reviewing dialog, 10 minutes learning new vocabulary, 10 minutes reviewing new grammar... so you'll at least have looked at it all. Most of your study time should be in recitation and practice.
*LEARN ENGLISH GRAMMAR IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW IT. Grammar is the skeleton of a language, its basic structure: you will be lost without it. Review an English grammar text as needed. Make comparisons between your foreign language to their English equivalents.
*PRACTICE FOR TESTS by doing what you will have to do on the test. If the test will require you to conjugate verbs, then review and practice the verb conjugations-- including spelling and accents. If you will be asked to listen, then practice listening. Listen to Spanish radio stations or watch Spanish television programs. Go over the assignments done for that specific chapter. Study beyond the point of recognition until you feel you can master the concepts (grammar/vocabulary). Do not wait until the night before the test to begin studying the material, study every day.
*ALWAYS HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Perfection cannot always be achieved; allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them.
*GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT. Seek help from your teacher as soon as you feel you don't understand a concept. Do not hesitate to ask questions. Form study groups or study-partner. Do not wait!
